Polls show Christie leading his Democratic challenger, state Sen. Barbara Buono, by wide margins ahead of Tuesday's election. Not surprisingly, spending by gubernatorial candidates has tumbled since 2009 when Christie ousted incumbent governor Jon Corzine, a Democrat who spent millions of his own fortune on the race.
Union spokesman Steve Wollmer said the majority of its money now is flowing to competitive legislative races in an effort to stop Christie's agenda, which includes a push to establish a pilot program that would give public school students vouchers to attend private or parochial schools.
"He's made it clear that his priority is privatization," Wollmer said of Christie. "Who sits in the legislature and makes these decisions is very important to our members."
"It's a whole new world in New Jersey politics," said Jeff Brindle, executive director of New Jersey's Election Law Enforcement Commission. The commission produced the report.
Election officials do not have a breakdown of which legislative races are attracting the most outside cash, but a tally of spending by the candidates and the two major political parties shows that 10 competitive races account for nearly three quarters of the money in all legislative contests.
The picture is different in New Jersey's Democratic controlled state Legislature, where all 120 seats are up. Republicans need to pick up five seats in the Senate to gain the majority and nine in the Assembly. Spending by legislative candidates has more than doubled since 2009.
